BLUE ANGEL

The church dedicated to St. Achillius, which Arilje is

named after, is in many ways a unique medieval building

that emerged in the 13

th

century. It stands out in par-

ticular thanks to the fresco of its founder King Dragutin,

standing beside his wife, Hungarian princess Kathleen,

and his brother Milutin, with whom he was in good rela-

tions at the time of the church’s construction. It takes

a long time staring at the high church walls until one’s

gaze falls on the elegantly painted figure of the Archan-

gel Gabriel, better known as the Arilje Blue Angel fresco,

one of the most beautiful in the legacy of the Serbian

Middle Ages. “Who has not seen you does not know

himself,” wrote great Serbian poet Branko Miljković as a

dedication to this fresco.

MALINE

ljudi u čijoj okolini rodi pet odsto svih

malina na svetu, čime se nezvanično

kandiduje za titulu svetske prestonice

malinarstva. Malina je glavni

izvozni proizvod toga kraja.

Sa dvadesetak hiljada stanov-

nika, gradić je vodeći u Srbiji

po izvozu po stanovniku. Brojni

malinjaci širili su se po okolini u

poslednjih pedeset godina, zaslu-

gom nekolicine mladih agronoma

koji su tada predvideli perspektivu

za gajenje tog voća.

RASPBERRIES

At the spot where the Veliki

Rzav merges with the River

Moravica, sits Arilje, a small town

of hardworking people, whose

surroundings are the birthplace

for five per cent of all raspber-

ries in the world, thereby leading

to the town being an unofficial

candidate for the title of world

raspberry capital. The raspberry

is the main export product of the

region. With twenty thousand

inhabitants, the town is the leader

in Serbia in terms of exports per

capita. Countless raspberry bush-

es have spread throughout the

area in the last fifty years, thanks

to numerous young agronomists

who then saw the prospects for

the cultivation of this berry fruit.
